Ski Sneak Peek of The Week: Middlebury Snow Bowl

Middlebury Snow Bowl

August 15, 2025

House first, then chimney. That’s usually how it works—unless you’re Middlebury Snow Bowl. Their fireplace was the original gathering place for chilly skiers—so they built a lodge around it.

It’s how the ski area operates: create the thing that’s needed and watch the community grow around it. When area ski teams started to shrink, Middlebury Snow Bowl launched a night skiing program (and opened night skiing for the rest of us). They created a free learner’s area under the lights with a small surface lift so anyone could come practice turns. They’re the place that betters the community and recruits people into it.

But it's a tragedy that it’s not open in the summer, because that sunny deck was a highlight of my pre-season trips around Vermont.

Things I learned about Middlebury this season:

  • RFIDs are here! Forever facing the wrong way, the weary wicket has been retired in favor of smooth-scanning efficiency.
  • Alpine and XC: Get a 10% discount with the newly unveiled Snow Bowl/Rikert combination season pass.
  • Middlebury offers an 8-week learner program starting at 3 years old.
  • Bailey’s Falls is OPEN! After a 2-season hiatus, the lift will be up and running for the winter. Fun fact: the tall aspens on Lift Line act as a natural windbreak, sheltering Bailey Falls Chair from gusts, making it less susceptible to windholds.
  • Updated snowmaking: Crews spent the summer replacing all the snowmaking pipe on Allen West and up to the summit.
